IT WAS A WOMAN WITH A RED HAT
(A poem on my birthday)
-- Nonilon V. Queano/22/3 October 2018/New York City

It was a woman with a red hat
Eating plums,
In the early evening,
As a full moon rises,
That must have lifted up my spirits,
Fagged out from another day, gone awry
From endless wandering around parks and gardens,
To keep awake or perhaps dispel the fear
Of surrendering to the cold,
And the rigmarole of waiting and hoping
For a brighter day,
Where music, too, should waft around
To enliven the air,
As red and golden birds of old,
Fly on to sunset.

It was a woman with a red hat,
Distracted me from my solitude,
Made me look up beyond the moon,
And I would have danced the night,
And, surely, like a poet chase after my Hippocrene,
Sing, oh, sing my songs of love,

Except that in the glowing light.
She stopped to asked
If I needed help
With my cane,
And did I see my way
Through the dimly-lighted lane.
